Ventspils is considered to have a business friendly environment. The number of enterprises registered in Ventspils exceeds 2000. Most of them function in the transport sector which is the dominant field of economic activity of the city.
In the beginning of 2005, 800 companies are working in Ventspils. The percentage of the total national GDP created in Ventspils, is 3.2% (2002), thus letting Ventspils rank as the second largest economic centre in Latvia after Riga.
