Ventspils municipality has immediately responded to the request of Ventspils twin city Stralsund (Germany) to help its municipality solve crisis situation caused by road salt running scarce, delivering Stralsund 130 tons of sodium chloride.
The municipality of Stralsund asked Ventspils municipality for assistance in solving problems due to this year's exceptionally cold and snowy winter. "The situation is dramatic indeed. A lot of snow has fallen here since December and therefore we now lack road salt (sodium chloride) for spraying on snowy and icy streets. We are left with no salt reserves to carry over, and a new snowfall is expected," Stralsund mayor Dr. Alexander Badrow wrote to Ventspils City Council adding that he would highly appreciate Ventspils municipality's help in providing sodium chloride for street-salting.
Understanding Stralsund's problems, representatives of Municipal Urban Environmental Services Company, at municipality's request, have contacted their salt suppliers and in the nearest future will provide Ventspils twin city Stralsund with 130 tons of road salt.
